Sponsio Academica

The sponsio academica is the oath taken by all students matriculating at the ancient Scottish Universities.   The version at Edinburgh University (being the youngest) is rather prosaic.    So here is the version at the University of Glasgow.

....ipsius academiae dignitatem atque salutem quantum in mefuerit per reliquam vitam procuraturum.
and that for the rest of my life, so far as in me lies, I will maintain the honour and welfare of the University.

Quite a thought!      The Sponsio had to be taken orally - in Latin - at one time.  But now it is just a text appended - in English - to the matriculation form to be signed.

52 years ago I arrived here for the first time.   The David Hume Tower and the University Library were almost brand new.

Extras:
From Buccleuch Place, Salisbury Crags in the distance.
The University Library - wearing well.
