How are the mighty fallen
And now for a complete change.....
This is the original multi-functional house. it stands ot the nothern end of Dunbar High Street and now thanks to Robert Adam's addition looks out to sea (or rather the local swimming pool)
It was built around 1840 for a Captain James Fall who was originally MP for Haddington area which included Dunbar. However, he was chucked out of Parliament when he was found to have rigged the vote and tried to pay off the returning officer. he and his brothers who were local merchants lived here until 1879 when it was sold of because of debts .
James Maitland, 8th Lord of Lauderdale purchased it and he became one of Scotland"s representative peers for the area. However, he rarely visited Dunbar and when he died in 1859 the property was sold to the War Office and became a barracks. During both World Wars it was used for training army personnel.
1955 it was sold to the local authority but they failed to find a use for it and eventually sold it in 1994 to a Housing Association who split it up into tenancies.
