3D Friends
Since 5th grade, when a little blond girl met a little brunet for the first time, there has been no way to define the height, depth and breadth of this friendship. Locker partners from the 5th through the 12th grade...and beyond, if only college had had lockers...BFFs forever, we are.
Because we created a little Hobbit party for our English class for extra credit in high school, it only seemed logical that we would see The Hobbit together...in 3D. There were other things we did together in high school, like stuffing a shark for extra credit in biology (do you see an 'extra credit' pattern here?), and hiding under a sink in a church basement (discovering a cleaning product named "Handy Andy", but getting no extra credit for this behavior) ...I still don't remember who we were hiding from...but the giggling under the sink should have given us away.
This evening, we began our belated birthday and early Christmas celebration with our spouses at Gino's Pizza...probably the only restaurant close to the theater that was there the 30+ years ago when we first read the Hobbit....and we ended outside the theater trying to remember how the Hobbit ties in with Lord of the Rings (J.R.R. Tolkein) and where the story line went from here. Was this only half the story? I can't remember. It seems they may have just set us up with a cliff hanger for a sequel. I did expect The Hobbit to be a complete work, but it didn't feel done. If only I could remember how the book ended, but no, I'm not going to read it again. Perhaps I'll Google that.....oh dear, not just one more...but TWO!
Ever since my friend was a little girl, she loved little children and wanted to grow up to be a teacher. "Tiny itty bitty one!", she would exclaim when she saw a little child. She did grow up to be a teacher, and eventually the librarian at a local high school. She loves children, and I thought of her all day as I heard the news of the Connecticut shooting. Such innocent lives. My prayer is that we will protect our children and they will get to grow up with their BFFs and make many memories together. For the families of the lost, both young and old, I am at such a loss. There are no words, only prayers for comfort and healing.
Living and Loving shared her heart on the tragedy so well.
