Wake up and smell the coffee

"Don't worry - things will look better in the morning."

Remarkable how often clichés and received wisdom have some genuine truth within them. Or perhaps it's entirely unremarkable, and we're foolish for thinking that what's true for most people doesn't apply to us.

In spite of my broken night, and the disturbing dream-loop I'd found myself in, the sunshine streaming through the kitchen window lifted my mood.

And if the weather had been grey and overcast? Well, I've always found that there's something about a new day that wipes away whatever's gone before it. Even though problems might still be front-of-mind, they lose much of the overwhelming power they gain at night. Having said that, there's no denying that the bright sunlight helped.

I needed my coffee badly this morning, though.

After waking so early, I'd struggled to get back to sleep - in fact, it felt as if my eyes had closed only seconds before the radio alarm had started blaring out at seven o'clock.
