Heirloom

This cross stitch blackwork hanging was worked by my Dutch grandmother in 1966 (before I was born!). It depicts old inn and shop signs, with names such as The Red Boot, Apothecary, and The Multicoloured Cow (cream and milk for sale here).

I am working my way through a huge collection of family photographs which I have recently inherited, and today I got as far as the slides (35mm colour transparencies). One of them, dated 1967, showed the kitchen of the house my grandparents had just moved into - with this hanging on the door! Lovely that it now hangs on my own kitchen door, reminding me of my grandmother and my childhood every time I look at it.
