Should I stay or should I go?

The fire is definitely going (and carpet!) but the surround is solid marble. A keeper ? Or out with the old and in with the new ?

Got the keys today for hubby's renovation project (not the Tangerine Dream House,we didn't go for that in the end)
This is the large rear reception room which he wants to knock through to the small kitchen for a big open plan dining/living area. May be there's the answer...do away with it,possibly altogether and thoroughly modernise..?
