Exeter day out
A group of four ladies who lunch boarded the delightful Tarka Line train from Barnstaple to Exeter this morning. Gorgeous trip through the Devon countryside arriving safely at Exeter Central in time for a coffee. The purpose of the trip was to go on one of the free talks/walks about Exeter's past / history. We arrived well before the 'off' time and waited . . . and waited . . . . and waited. The guides give up their time free but are usually very punctual so at 11.10 we phoned the 'office' and eventually found out that the guide had had a diary malfunction! He thought he was 'on' tomorrow - oops.
So we hot footed it up to the Underground passages and on arrival were told we'd be allowed a free talk due to our earlier mishap. Wow - what a generous offer. So we enjoyed a wander under the streets of Exeter learning about medieval water pipes - constructed from 1346 - to bring clean water to the Cathedral. Exeter city is the only city in the UK with underground water passages apparently. A second passage was eventually constructed to bring clean water to the public. Well worth the visit.
Obviously then it was lunch time so we went back the Cathedral Cafe, enjoyed a delicious light lunch, decided not to wait for the much later tour but to come back another day and try again for the walk/talk and the Cathedral Tour. So back to the station and another journey on the Tarka Line. It was drizzling when we arrived so hot footed it back to our cars and home for a warm cup of tea.
Blip shows gargoyles on the cathedral, negotiating the narrow tunnels, reflections in a ball and the narrowest street in England - Parliament St, Exeter.
