Dachau concentration camp
A serious day today, and intensely interesting and informative, wandering the expansive site of Dachau concentration camp. Of course, it’s highly santitised now, and the rooms are full of presentations and stories and a few artefacts, but the landscape itself has a particular feel of solemnity. I left Janet reading in the rooms - she would read the label on a sauce bottle - and went and sat out with the place. I walked the perimeter and between the barrack huts, and the crematoria. Our guide was very well informed, keen not to disseminate his own feelings, but clearly felt in our post-talk conversations, as I do, that we approach similar possibilities as the extreme right re-emerges. Not just here, not just there, but across the world.
