Rothesay Tramways Isle of Bute 1882 to 1936

Wet day working on a postcard display. In 1902 electric operations replaced the horse drawn tramway of 1882 the gauge was reduced to 3 feet 6 inches. Ten trams of the design seen in this 1907 card with car number 3 at the Rothesay terminus in Guildford Square shipped to the island from  Greenock. In 1905 the line was extended from the original terminus in Port Bannatyne a further two and a half miles to Ettrick Bay a popular beach area on the west coast of the island. Thousands of summer visitors from Glasgow and other towns flocked to the Isle of Bute in those days by the Clyde steamers
This photo was taken from the upper window of the Lorne Hotel and shows the  double track crossover at the terminus with the conductor guiding the trolley rope on the correct wire
