Ten Clues

Tonight was the launch of the Poetry New Zealand Yearbook. Over the Harbour Bridge to Devonport. S had a poem chosen to be in it. She was also one of those who read her poem at the launch. Being totally unbiased, I think she was one of the best readers.

Afterwards Prof Chris Gallavin who had featured, reciting two powerful social commentary poems (one by Tim Shadbolt and one by Sam Hunt), talked to her and told her that he was going to email her about her poem which he had really liked. One happy poet on the way home.

Which stimulated me to include here a found poem that I made a few weeks back. I found the poem by taking ten of the clues in the Guardian cryptic crossword puzzle shown in my blip, and the solutions, and combining them to make the following poem:

Ten Clues

The guardian’s
backyard basilica
in close season
gave notice about ignescents

Guard coming up short
feeble fellow
one palatinate unwanted
in bed writer stalks singer

The secret garden leaves one grass
around Roman building
Brazilian weed
removes this drinker’s seat

One’s broken awfully
chastened landscape with regret
in story badly singe
small coins which emit new year

Sparks historical region
awarded spread preserving a language
design
bags, pubic hair, and clothing item

xxxxxxxxx

The extra is S reading her poem at the book launch
