Lytham Shrimper
Shrimping was a thriving occupation in the Lytham of the 19th century. By 1950 there were still up to 20 full time shrimpers operating in the area.
This life size bronze Shrimper by Colin Spofford was commissioned as part of a heritage lottery project for the Lowther Gardens in Lytham St Anne's and unveiled in November 2003. The history of Shrimping in the area was meticulously researched to ensure that the sculpture's clothing and accessories stayed true to an 1880's shrimper from the area. The unveiling of the shrimper statue was performed by Russell Wignall, the only remaining full time shrimper, on the 25th November 2003.
