The Old Great North Road

A warm and sunny day was in prospect so we hopped on to the M62 and headed East.  As we approached the junction with the A1 thick mist was forming ahead and the temperature was dropping, so we came off and headed north.  On a whim I thought it would be fun to follow the old Great North Road (A1), which we did.
This is Aberford, just east of Leeds and this road was once a very busy highway, but now the village is a quiet backwater.
Entering the village from the south (along the route of the old road) the very impressive Gascoigne Almshouses (see extra) are on the left.  Built in 1844 they are now a thriving business centre.
