Spalted
Another glorious day. It was more our less my last chance to do my February winter bird survey so I was particularly glad of the fine weather. The most interesting sightings were a Buzzard and 3 Jays. As usual on these surveys I didn’t take a camera so some felled beech trees provided a good opportunity for a phone shot. The markings on the wood are caused by a fungus and are called spalting . Beech is one of the best trees for this and the resulting wood is much prized by woodturners
