Catkins at dawn

I was expecting a cool morning before sunrise after a clearish night in February. By the time Gus and I saw the fireball rising, I was perspiring porcinely.

It was a good Autumn for forming baby catkins on Arnside Knott, and now it's a good Winter for pollen production. Until this year I had never realised that hazel bushes are not synchronised with each other, their catkins and red stigma'd buds are at various stages of development on different plants. It makes for a prolonged pollination season, and perhaps that's the point.

Later in the day, we went to see the Arnside bore on yet another 10 metre+ tide. It was early, and we missed it. So we had coffee in the Posh Sardine instead. Maybe tomorrow.
