The Pawns' Education

“While all our pawns excel at chess,
an excellent foundation,”
one king declares, “let's not neglect
their wider education.”

The queens agree, as do the knights,
indeed, they're effervescent:
“Let's start with art – begin today –
there's no time like the present!”

All the pawns are in a rush
to visit Aphrodite.
The statue makes the bishops blush.
One pawn cries, “Where's her nightie?”

A rook remarks, while gazing on
the statue's godly charms,
"You'd think the pawns would rather ask,
Where's Aphrodite's arms?!"

But education, it would seem,
takes many forms: a nude,
in classic art, the pawns soon learn,
is not construed as rude.

It's been a glorious day - more like April than February - and I've been outdoors gardening and for a lovely walk. Today would have been my mother's 99th birthday, so I've tried to derive double the pleasure from our beautiful world today on her behalf, too.
