Old Kendal

This mural can be found on the wall of what is still called Police Yard. It runs off the Market Place.

In 1835 the Municipal Corporations Act permitted for the first time the appointment of paid constables.

Kendal was quick off the mark and in 1836 a Superintendant and three constables were on duty.

Wainwright’s book on Kendal in the 19th. Century reproduces an advertisement dated 1844 for a Superintendent of Police for the Borough of Kendal. A salary of £80 per annum was offered with clothing allowance, house rent and taxes free. That was probably a well paid post at the time.
