Strange

A beautiful day with lots of sunshine and positively warm. But we did not head out for the prettiest place, nor did we stay here and watch the sea, we went to find the strangest place, somewhere Gordon has always wanted to go to - Dungeness.

And it is certainly strange. A vast area of shingle, one of the largest in the world; it has been described as a desert, the only one in the UK. It is quite breathtaking. But there is more to Dungeness than shingle and the extra picture says it all. There are two lighthouses, an old one and a new one. There are two power stations, an old one and a new one. There is a railway and scattered about are tiny houses, often made originally from old railway coaches, but now renovated. There are old boats and other stuff lying about all over the place - an out-of-time feel. Quite surreal.

Before Dungeness itself, we visited the RSPB Nature Reserve. A delightful trail, with lots of excellent hides, takes you round a large area of pools, reed beds, marshes and always the acres of shingle. Lots and lots of birds to be seen. A great place.
