Two swans a-swimming.....and one forlorn swan.
These two swans are mates. I watched them as they glided across the Pool on our long walk in the park this morning.
The bird population which frequents our garden are beginning to check out nesting sites, and in our resident robin's case and that of our blackbird pair, repelling all invaders to their territory.
The robins amuse me so much with their displaying, puffing out their red breasts and displaying their rumps to rival males.
The swans in the main photo came across to a lone one who was on the other side of the pool. As they were being given some bird seed to eat, scattered on the water by another walker, they attacked the lone swan. It was vicious. They raised their beautiful feathered wings in arches over their backs, and bent their regal heads as they bore down towards where he (or she) was sheltering by the bank.
They pecked furiously and got hold of its neck.
It was not a pretty sight and best left well alone.
Swans will attack if necessary, especially when they are nesting in the spring.
It has been definitely spring like today so far.
I heard my first blackbird spring song, and that of a wren, as we went on our way. Things are "waking up".
On this day last year we had snow!
So I'm enjoying this early burst of, hopefully, more spring like days to follow.
Now I'm off out to read in the summerhouse, which although unheated is warm in the sunshine.
Hubby has gone to the gym.
