Martinique

A different landscape today on the island of Martinique. This is Mt Pelée which exploded in 1902 destroying the town of Saint -Pierre, the wealthiest town in the Caribbean at the time, and killing all but three of its inhabitants. The explosion of searing hot ash set the town on fire and it burned for three days The deadly gas killed the people almost instantaneously. The town has never been rebuilt to what it once was as the inhabitants fear it could happen again. So sad.
