For a supposedly Anglophobic people, the French have endowed the English language with a remarkable number of phrases which show an alternative view of the world. Phrases which really do have no equivalent in the straitened English way of thinking. Phrases like "joie de vivre", "raison d'être", "je ne sais quoi" and "midgets on acid"...
