Suffragettes

There is a lovely new promenade along the banks of the River Avon in Christchurch, passing many points of interest.

In 1893, Lord Glasgow - the Governor General - signed into law an Act giving women the right to vote. It was a hard fought struggle, but New Zealand thus became the first country in the world to acheive women’s suffrage.

Extra: The River Avon.
