Eels of Ely
This is set into the pavement of the Market Place at Ely. I must have walked over this hundreds of times! For once, there were no stalls at all (there's usually a few, even when it's not Thursday) and the various commemorative slabs set into the brickwork of the pavement caught my eye. This one shows an eel and an eel basket. The catching of eels was a major economic activity in the Fens in the past, before the Fens were 'improved' and drained by my compatriots (I am half Dutch), and gave the city of Ely its name.
