Bingley Five Rise
This morning we had to deliver a bed we'd sold on Facebook. The buyer lives in Bingley right by the Leeds - Liverpool Canal. We were there last summer on a scorching hot day, when we took 'Fiddlesticks' our narrowboat up the 5 locks. Bingley Five Rise is the steepest flight of locks in the shortest distance on the longest canal in the UK. It rises (or descends ) 59 ft 2 ins over a distance of 320 ft. It was opened in 1774! Imagine how hard it must have been to build such a magnificent structure back then without the luxury on modern machinery. What an incredible feat of engineering!
When we went up it last year we had help from the lock keepers to open and close the 6 sets of lock gates.
Today we just had a short walk along the canal then went to the Bingley Five Rise Cafe for a hot cuppa as there was a bitter cold wind blowing.
