Keeping a watchful eye...

... on everything going on around him. This included the camera that was occasionally pointed in his direction.

To succeed in candid street photography, you have to develop a range of little diversionary activities to convince people that you aren't interested in them as a subject. I try not to make eye contact, I pretend to be fiddling with the camera controls, maybe point the camera at the upper part of a building using the viewfinder and pretend to take a picture.

I can then lift up the rearview screen and appear to be inspecting the photo I have just taken, when actually tapping the screen fires the shutter. That's exactly what happened to take this image.

I find it also pays to hang around for a short time after the shot, still fiddling with the camera and pretending to be waiting for someone.
