Laura's Tower

Today's the day ............................ to travel by train

Ah well, all good things come to an end and today we had to go home. That meant quite an interesting train journey though - up through Wales to Shrewsbury where we changed on to the Manchester train and from there on to Oxenholme Lake District.

We had half an hour to wait in Shrewsbury which wasn't long enough to go and do anything - but from the station platform I could see this tower at one end of the walls of Shrewsbury Castle.

Apparently it was built around 1790 by Thomas Telford as a summerhouse for Laura, the daughter of Sir William Pulteney, the then owner of the castle. It is octagonal in shape, built of red sandstone with a conical copper roof.

Just the sort of place a damsel-in-distress might hang out in ........................
