‘I Am Australian’

New temporary piece in Yagan Square. Named ‘I Am Australian’ it depicts the nationalities living in Perth based on the latest census (I’m sure I read that somewhere!).

There is always a great debate around this time of year in Australia. Australia Day is the 26th January. It marks the day Australia was ‘discovered’ by Europeans. Many indigenous people do not like the date (to put it mildly). Should they change the date? Should there be an Australia Day? Many questions are asked with few answers!

I think this piece is attempting to show that Australia is made of many people, cultures, traditions and nations. Whether people want to see that or agree with that depends on them. Either way it’s a difficult issue, to put it mildly!
