Ayre Mill
Walked back from Hatston, having dropped my car off at its second home... the garage, to be repaired, again!
The light was fading but I really like this building and its history.
Established in 1839 as a water powered saw mill, its wheel could turn in either direction depending on the eb and flow of the tide. In later years it was a meal mill and was updated to steam and diesel.
In 1942 it became an egg packing station. Egg production was a major industry here until a terrible storm in 1952 destroyed the hen houses throughout the islands.
Half the building is now flats.
