Trains, Plains and Autophotos
Another early start as we left the Hill Club at 6:30 in preparation for a minivan drive to the Horton Plains nature reserve. If you arrive much after 10 then the valleys all mist up and the views from the ‘End of the World’ view point are less impressive.
We made it in time but after having completed a night trek the day before our legs weren’t that grateful. Views were indeed worth the trek and caught glimpses of purple faced monkeys (although their faces are actually white). Roadside lunch then onto the train that would take us to our next overnight stop. Typically the Stationmaster has no idea when the train was coming. We were told 30 minutes and that another hillward bound train was arriving first. And then almost immediately that our train was due now. They get their information from the same place Greater Anglia do in the UK!
Standard scrum to get on amongst the locals, backpackers and drum playing musicians. No seat but no worries we had a view out of the open door where some locals were riding the footplate and whooping on entering every tunnel. There were a lot of tunnels.
One fellow traveler stood out. A red dressed Chinese girl who was desperate to get to the open door. Once there she posed and shrieked, balancing on one leg oblivious to the danger of the next tunnel, tree or rail side obstacle whilst her boyfriend/videographer snapped away.
Massage, beer, food and billiards completed another great day.
