Lions of the Great War
On November 4 2018 the 10 feet high bronze statue of a Sikh Soldier was unveiled opposite the Guru Nanak Gurdwara on Smethwick High Street. It commemorated 100 years since the ending of WW1 and is dedicated to the memory of all those South Asian Service Personnel of all faiths of the British Indian Army who were killed in the world wars.
It is a beautiful strong statue and I was fascinated by it. I was very pleased to be able to photograph it for the Art UK Sculpture project. It's too new to be in my reference book! How marvellous! 5 sculptures in Smethwick done today. One new, one old, two not very well looked after metal ones, and a shiny one outside Mc Donald's in Oldbury. All interesting.
Then we went to spend the afternoon at the Smethwick Photographic Society International Exhibition which was stimulating, motivating and inspiring. And also a bit intimidating. How to even get close to images like that! If you can get to the exhibition, do go - it's on in the evenings all week and in the afternoons next weekend. Details Here
