Mini Murmuration
I have been seeing a lot of starling murmuration pictures in recent weeks. The huge flocks look amazing as the swirl around, creating spectacular shapes. Apparently the way the flocks work is that each bird pays close attention to the moves of its nearest neighbours - maybe 6-8 other birds - and this is replicated throughout the flock, whatever its size. Which must be why the group of just fifty birds that hang around Straiton Place in Portobello replicated some of the features of a much larger murmuration as they flew around the evening sky. A shame it isn't a much bigger spectacle but even so it was fascinating to watch.
