RIP Dave Brubeck

It was a beautiful day here today - 75 F and sunny. Afters a walk on the beach, I returned home only to hear that Dave Brubeck had passed away. He would have been 92 tomorrow.

I went to my phone and put on Jazz 88 in NYC and they had already begun playing music associated with this great jazz musician and composer. I saw him the first time when I was a kid when my music teacher brought me to NYC for the Timex All-Star Jazz Show, at the same CBS studio that Letterman now broadcasts.

I met Brubeck at a national music educators conference in D.C. about 15 years ago. He was a great force in music education and presented workshops as well as a concert at the National Cathedral. I quickly looked for my pictures, but it was pre-digital. Who knows where they are?

He had 6 children. In '07 I had the good fortune to do a photo shoot for the "Brubeck Brothers Band, including TWO of his children, Dan (drums) and Chris (bass and trombone). I met some of the family and they couldn't have been nicer.

So here's an image of a few of my old Brubeck LP's, sitting on my piano - not very creative, but the best I could do quickly.
