The Nova Scotia Pub and Place One Street #3
To the side of the road that leads to a Dock slipway are 9 terraced houses attached to the Nova Scotia Pub. Built in the 19th century they face across the lock from the Dock Cottages #1 and Deal Cottages #2 and again were built to house dock workers.
The Nova Scotia Pub is a grade 11 listed building and was converted out of 3 terraced houses into a coaching inn. The entrance to the coach yard is still there as well as traces of large lanterns. It is full of character with pictures, photographs and maps on the walls and has a cosy snug called the Captain's table. Outside, beside the trompe l'oeil of the old dock painting on the garage wall, there are bench picnic tables, with views up the Docks and across to the swing bridge between the Cumberland basin and the harbour (see map).
At lunchtime and in the evenings it is well patronised by local regulars and on Mondays it heaves to music of the Nova Scotia Folk Club, which is the longest running acoustic music club in Bristol, when they host some of the greatest talent in the south west. Beginners or hugely talented, all are welcome to play and encouraged to bring their own instrument to join in.
