Maori Waka

This is where the important Waitangi Treaty was signed in 1840 between the British government and the Maori chiefs agreeing to live as one nation. In this shelter lies the 35 metre long canoe which takes a minimum of 76 paddlers to handle it safely. It is a larger version of the canoes that the Maoris used to use on long coastal journeys.
