Stromness Yule Log Pull

The Stromness Annual Hogmanay Log Pull Junior Competition this afternoon
The Log Pull is a test of strength between two teams: the ‘Northenders’ and the ‘Soothenders’ of Stromness and this year there is a Junior and a Senior competition.  The junior log weighs 200kg, the senior log is 400kg.
This is the junior competition in progress; after a few initial pulls to the North, the strength of the ‘Soothenders’ showed and the log took its inexorable journey along the street to the Post Office.
Traditionally, the Yule Log competition was played late on Christmas Eve by the boys and younger men of the town but the game died out in 1937.  It was revived last Hogmanay.
