If you believe they put a man on the moon
Is this how it feels to lose your mind? Nothing around you but empty space and the sound of your steps echoing on concrete?
I coughed - and the sound was so alien to me, so unnaturally loud in the silence, that I made an involuntary whimpering noise. Somehow animal-like, inhuman. Feelings of anxiety were building within me, tension growing with every step.
The all-over greyness, the brightness of the strip lights and the room's emptiness all combined to create a sense of unreality. And yet, this didn't have the quality of a dream; the aches in my shoulders from lying on the concrete floor were real.
I walked from the door to the other end the of the warehouse-like space. It was only the lack of any clutter - of anything that pointed towards a purpose - that stopped me thinking of it as the kind of shed-like industrial unit you seem to see everywhere.
Empty of anything, the room felt vast and intimidating, and it was this that made me walk close to the walls. By the time I'd returned to the locked door and the empty glass, I was sure the place was empty. There were no other entrances, no windows, no visible security cameras, no panels in the walls, no light-switches, no phones, no wiring that I could see.
Nothing. Just me, and an empty glass.
By now, I could feel myself starting to tremble - not with cold, but with a growing fear. What was this all about? Why was I in here? I rested my forehead on the painted metal wall, its surface pitted like a lunar landscape - and let out a shuddering sigh.
And then the lights went out.
