Christian Dior
The Denver Art Museum is featuring an exhibition about the fashion house founded in 1947 by Christian Dior. After he died suddenly in 1957, Yves Saint Laurent took over at the age of 21. Since YSL left three years later to start his own house, there have been five more head designers for the house of Dior.
After a designer draws a sketch, it is transformed into a 3D “toile” or mock-up in plain cotton muslin, as displayed here. Once the designer approves of the toile, it is laid out flat and used as a pattern for a prototype cut from the chosen fabric.
I learned that the texture of the fabric is what really makes a design.
