The Lanes
The Lanes Shopping Centre in Carlisle was built in the 1980s to replace an area of early 19th century housing, shops and workplaces. When one of the shops collapsed, it was decided that the whole area needed to be replaced. The names of the original lanes have been retained and I suppose this plaque was designed to give an idea of what would have been going on before the shops. (I am now wondering about the significance of the grape vines.)
