Decisions, Decisions
It was touch and go whether the Christmas festivities and meal would take place at the Gliding Club on top of the big hill (Long Mynd), above Church Stretton this evening. There was horrendous weather up there last night, the temperature plummeted to -11degrees, and there was a gale blowing, thus the people staying in their caravans were more than rocked to sleep – although very little sleep was had by many we were told. ‘Matilda’ doesn’t live at the Gliding club any more, she just visits from time to time, so we had booked the best room, en suite don’t you know. First thing in the morning it looked very unlikely that the dinner would take place as there was ice everywhere and still a very strong wind. M said he would be e-mailing everyone in the early afternoon if there was the likelihood of a thaw. We didn’t hear anything until nearly 3pm which was that even though the snow gates were closed at the bottom of the Burway, access up the hill was possible but still fairly slippy on top. It was indeed a pretty hairy journey up the hill in pouring rain, a howling gale and a thick mist.
I’m glad to say that all the intrepid travellers who dared the ascent arrived safely but there were quite a few who cancelled. After all that and some restorative gins the evening went ahead as planned and a very good time was had by all, the kitchen staff produced a fabulous meal and D's decorations were absolutely beautiful.
