The Scot's Language- lesson no.1 - Dreich.
Dreich is how we would describe this weather. Dreich, meaning damp, misty, overcast, dull.
It may seem as if we've fixated by the weather but that's because it governs so much of what we do. Today was very dreich so we went shopping. Better dry in the car than working outside in the wet on a dreich day.
I was working in the USA a few years ago, Atlanta, with some people who come to Scotland every year for their holidays. I couln't understand why they would come to spend their time here when it can be so dreich.
'We've just got airconditioning in the house - you've got a whole country with it"
One man's dreich is anothers man's cool.
