Ullswater

Another lovely December day in the Lakes, cold with wall to wall sunshine and far reaching views across Ullswater to the Helvellyn Range and Blencathra.

It was part of the plan to eventually conquer Blencathra this week. Events conspired against us and so this fine, enigmatic mountain will have to wait for a future visit. It’ll still be there next time we’re here.

Sore hip (me) and blisters from relatively new boots (Susan) meant that unfortunately Blencathra was not to be. Such a shame as I doubt if we’d ever be so fortunate with the weather in winter as we were today.

Instead of Blencathra, views of which were clearly taunting us from afar, we partly retraced our steps onto Askham Fell, bagged Heughscar Hill then followed the upper Ullswater Way down to Howtown and so back to Pooley Bridge. It was a fine if somewhat shorter walk than the previous two days. Made our acquaintance with the Cockpit Circle , yet another ancient Bronze Age on Askham Fell before dropping down to Ullswater.

I’d made contact with Clickychick this morning and she and Jerra were at their lodge nearby and invited us over for a very welcome cup of tea. We spent a very pleasant couple of hours with them both talking about all manner of topics. Next time we’re up we’ll try and organise a Blipmeet, but it might be a few months away!

Last night at the hotel before the long journey south. Hopefully we can make it across the Pennines to the A1 before the threatened snowfall.
