Iceland, Day 4. Home.
Last day today. Sob!
We had to leave for the airport straight away after breakfast but had time to pop down to the shop by the harbour for a fridge magnet. Can't go home from a holiday without a fridge magnet!!
The drive back to Reykjavik was lovely for the first couple of hours then the clouds came down and the rain started. We've been so, so, so lucky to have had the clear, sunny days we've had. It would have been rubbish in such crappy weather.
The less said about dropping the car off and getting through check-in the better. It involved rain, broken petrol pumps, freezing howling wind, a fifty mile trek from the car depot to the airport, broken check in counters and stupid BA not printing bag tags at self service counters and stupid queues and rude and unhelpful check in staff. Uuuughhhhhhhh!
There was one of those feedback stations where you press a smiley, a neutral or an angry face to describe your experience. We pressed the red, angry face many, many times!!!
Things looked up after that!!
It all took so long that it was time to go straight to the gate. Just time to get a cup of tea and eat our half board option.
We let almost everyone board before we got up and were thrilled to discover that we were second last to board. Just in front of ex Chelsea and Iceland Striker Eidur Gudjohnsen. Speaking in purely footballing terms, my God he was fit!!!!!
And stylish.
And tall and handsome.
And brooding in that Scandi way.
My mum and I were positively giddy!!!!
We went up an escalator from the gate to the plane and I was debating whether or not to get a selfie of me and my mum which would have featured him behind us. I dithered too long and probably would have crashed off the top of the escalator so didn't risk it!
We were astounded that he followed us all the way down to the back of the plane. We assumed he'd be up the front but, no, he was in cattle class with the rest of us!
No sooner had we sat down - two rows in front of Eidur - the captain came over the tannoy and said our departure would be delayed by an hour due to a backlog at Heathrow caused by fog. Annoying!!!!!! Why on earth couldn't they have let us stay in the airport rather than boarding us all? Grrrrrrrrr!!!
There was general grizzling and whinging and then the captain came back on to say that a passenger had decided to get off and if anyone else wanted to they should let the cabin crew know.
Hilariously, when we saw the passenger walk up the aisle to get off it turned out to be Eider Gudjohnsen!!!
When he'd gone the cabin crew had to do a full security check and identify every piece of hand luggage and all the coats etc in the overhead lockers. Cue much more whinging and grizzling - and then much laughter and jollity as we all turned into school children putting our hands up and shouting to claim our stuff!
Take off - when we eventually took off (forty minutes late rather than the full hour) was pretty scary. Battering winds made it a bit bumpy. But once we were up it was fine and the flight flew by!
I loved looking out of the window as we flew over the Highlands and Islands and then down past Glasgow and Manchester. The lights looked so pretty!
My dad kindly came to get us from Heathrow and in no time at all we were back at theirs for a quick cup of tea before he brought me back home.
Back to the Little Misses, Mr K and Archie. Yay!
