Sgwarnog: In the Field

Europe

On the geographer's principal that you never leave an old atlas to gather dust in a charity shop, I came across this 1897 Public Schools Atlas of Modern Geography  while continuing to pack up my office today.

Flicking through, I can't think why I was particularly drawn to this Europe page. I found a Europe where Finland is part of the Russian Empire, Austria is at its peak, Turkey has eaten much of Greece and a score or more of today's nation states are barely recognised. But it is still Europe.
