Pro Patria
In recognition of Liverpool seamen who served/died during the Second World War
I've always been affected by this statue. I think I particularly like the anchor (on the column). My Dad survived WWII; but died fairly recently; he spent the whole of the war at sea; doing several Atlantic Convoys, as thousands of other Liverpool men did, and towards the end of the war, working the River Mersey.
A bit of academic stuff: DULCE ET DECORUM EST - the first words of a Latin saying (taken from an ode by Horace). The words were widely understood and often quoted at the start of the First World War. They mean "It is sweet and right." The full saying ends the poem: Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori - it is sweet and right to die for your country. (???).
