Sáo Martinho de Tibáes Monastery
An incredible (another) discovery today. Not far away, but seemingly not on the popular visit list. We were the only visitors to this world class historic site today.
Originally a Roman Monastery dating to 1110 A.D.
In 1567 Mother House of the St. Bento Congregation.
Baroque and Rococo restoration in the 17th and 18th century.
Acquired by the Portuguese State in 1986, when it was in advanced degradation.
Layne and I agreed this is at the top of must see places. Heading back to finish seeing the rest of this massive complex!
