Legless Lizard (I think)
I took a photo of what I thought was a snake, and then wandered across the street to chat with the neighbor. In minutes, the tail was back on the driveway moving quite a bit so that I could not tell exactly what was going on.
At first, I thought perhaps that I had thrown it off its defences in some way and that something had gotten to it...a bird perhaps? But, nearby, even glancing only casually over that direction, I could not imagine anything had the time to approach.
When I looked more closely at the photos, I saw glass and realized that the critter had been cut on glass, and most likely released that part of the "tail" rather than ... well, rather than not? This is what lizards do all of the time to escape being caught, so perhaps this is a legless lizard... or maybe snakes do this as well (?).
Later, we saw the head end, which was still quite long, moving across the other side of the drive and looking like he/she was going to make it just fine. I hope.
Many people are afraid of wildlife...bugs, snakes, whatever.(I know I used to be more so than I am now)..but really, critters have a lot more to fear from us...cars, pollution, glass from bottles tossed unthinking... Just why do people toss trash this way? I will never understand.
