Bonnington Weir

Built in 1926 by the Clyde Valley Electrical Power Company this tilting weir ensures the level of water going to the turbines is balanced by the level of the river.

Bonnington Power Station was one of the first major hydro power schemes in Scotland and the pioneering work at Bonnington led to the fast expansion of Scottish Hydro Electricity

This is the southern boundary of the World Heritage Estate of New Lanark.

Amazingly the area is under the threat of quarrying expansion. A Scottish Government decision is due ‘imminently’.

Protestors fear it will affect the Falls of Clyde, Wildlife and bring industrial noise pollution to the Nature Reserve.
