POO

Another of Chatham's rather lovely Arts and Crafts era buildings. This one has been previously enjoyed for both its turret and also its sideways window.

It was the detail on the window which led me to a hunch; could that be a representation of a citrus tree? And do those bullseyes suggest oranges? The window installed sideways is in a yellow-brick section at the rear of the building which may or may not be contemporary with its red-brick front.

The red-brick front was obviously originally a public house called the Prince of Orange. The five front-facing sash windows at first floor level all have fixed panels above which match the motif of the larger window I posted a couple of days ago. It is my belief that that panel was originally over the main entrance door to the pub, which is on the oblique face to the right, beneath the turret and rather lovely balcony.

These days it is no longer a pub and has been reinvented as a Chinese Take Away called “Taste of China” Or as I shall always know it, POO Taste of China.
