Picture 8: Rubha nan Gall lighthouse

Day 8 of the Mull Geology Advent Calendar. Morning walk out to the lighthouse. Always great views from here no matte the weather.Whats the geology interest - the lighthouse sits on Palaeogene basalt lavas which are distinctly columnar here. No long columns but the polygonal structure is well seen.  The approach to the LH is made of Jurasssic sandstone which was quarried from an outcrop a short distance to the north. Nice red sandstone with concretions in it. And thats Ardnamurchan and Ben Hiant in the distance, another of the Paleogene Igneous Centres

Other geology interest - some nice agate to be found just north of here as well as the usual basalt features - spheroidal weathering, red tops, amygdales etc. And a little bit further north of the LH there is an outcrop of more Jurassic strata - mainly sandstone and limestone.
