Saltire birthplace
A photo for the eve of St Andrews Day at Athelstaneford, the birthplace of the saltire, or St Andrews Cross flag.
The historic doocot of the National Flag Heritage Centre. Legend says that on the eve of a battle between Picts and Angles from Northumbria in 832AD Saint Andrew had a vision of victory and when the Picts saw a white cross formed by clouds in a blue sky they attributed their victory to his blessing, adopting the cross as a flag.
