What the deuce...

...are these two technological marvels all about...

The electricity one came first – but it is a Mark 1 as our meter isn’t compatible with the Mark 2 version.

The gas one came last week – it is a Mark 2, and is compatible with all Mark 2 meters, whichever the service provider.

We didn’t ask for either Smart Meter, the companies contacted us in order to install them. It is likely that the electricity lot will come again within a year and replace our main meter, and it will then be compatible with the Smart Meter the gas company installed. But to achieve government targets they are STILL installing Mark 1 meters, knowing they will soon have to be replaced. How is that saving money and resources – as I’m guessing the customer will be paying for all this! Not smart at all...

It just crystallises for me the pointlessness and the short termism of government targets. All the focus is then on achieving the target, not on whether the outcome is useful in the first place, or whether it could be done in a much better – but slightly more expensive - way...

Rant over – both meters are now in a deep dark drawer - and thanks for hosting MonoMonday this month  JohnEdward - I hope your theme for next week doesn’t make me scratch my head as much ;)
